Matters of the heart aren't always romantic. Take, for instance, the Queen of the Night's famous aria from The Magic Flute. In the aria, the Queen is filled with rage against the priest Sarastro, singing in the opening line "The vengeance of hell boils in my heart!" The Queen tries to convince her own daughter Pamina to kill Sarastro, offering her an ultimatum: murder him or be cursed forever. We learn later in the opera that Sarastro is pure of heart, and Pamina ignores her allegiance to her mother. The aria requires some vocal acrobatics and a range rarely found in opera. The role was first premiered by Mozart's sister-in-law, soprano Josepha Weber, who, after a highly successful premier, would continue to perform as the Queen of the Night for ten more years.
