Frostbite

The winter solstice is right around the corner, which means we're about to dive headlong into the coldest months of the year. So this week, the Ether Game Brain Trust is saluting some frozen musical selections in a show we're calling "Frostbite."

Did you know...

  • Contemporary British composer Max Richter "re-imagined" the famous Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi in 2012, turning the Baroque concerto into a post-minimalist work.
  • The premiere of the opera The Snow Maiden by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov featured Igor Stravinsky's father Fyodor, himself a famous bass, singing one of the lead roles.
  • Franz Schubert's Winterreise is based on a set of poems by Wilhelm Müller, dealing with loneliness and isolation in the wintertime.
  • The song "White Winter Hymnal," which evoked the sounds of Bob Dylan and the Beach Boys, made the band Fleet Foxes famous in 2008.
