Twinkies Are Back, With An Extended Shelf Life

twinkies on the shelves

The moment junk food fans have been waiting for is near -- Twinkies are returning to store shelves on July 15.

Contrary to popular belief that only Twinkies and cockroaches will survive the Apocalypse, Twinkies do have an expiration date. The former shelf life of the snack cake was 26 days. When they re-debut on Monday, those cakes will last 45 days.

The new company says the formula was actually changed by Hostess right before the bankruptcy, meaning the products were made for only about a week before production stopped.

Hostess shipped to 50,000 stores nationwide before the shutdown. Now, the target is 110,000 locations before the end of the year. Some Twinkies will be shipped frozen to extend their shelf life even further.

Hostess Brands liquidated last year after attempts at mediation failed. The bakery company was then purchased by a joint venture between Apollo Global Management and C. Dean Metropoulos & Co.
