House Passes Bill To Block GMO Labeling

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill Thursday that would bypass states' laws mandating labeling of foods containing genetically modified organisms.

The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015 passed the House 275-150.

Supporters, like the Grocery Manufacturers Association and other food companies, say that mandatory GMO labeling confuses consumers and that genetically modified foods are safe.

Opponents have dubbed the bill "Deny Americans the Right to Know," or DARK Act. They say the bill will likely be stalled in the Senate.

If this bill becomes law, it will make Vermont's labeling law (and others like it) void, require a new certification process for any foods labeled GMO-free, and have a trickle-down effect on other FDA processes, like more oversight into how the term "natural" is used.
