General Mills Removes Artificial Colors, Flavors From Cereal

Green clovers and blue moons will soon get their colors from natural products, like fruits and vegetables.

General Mills is the latest company to reformulate its products. The cereal manufacturer announced Monday it would remove artificial colors and flavors from its cereals.

General Mills has already reformulated Cheerios to make them free of artificial ingredients, but now other cereals, like Trix, Reese's Puff and Lucky Charms, are getting makeovers.

The company announced the move on their blog, stating 60 percent of their cereals are already free of artificial ingredients, and the remaining cereals will be within three years. Of that remaining 40 percent, General Mills is targeting 75 percent by January.

Some cereals, like Reese's Puffs, have already been through testing and soon will contain real vanilla.

The company is still tinkering with marshmallows, however. Though the company hopes to have Lucky Charms reformulated by the end of 2016, it may take longer.
