EU Mulls New License For Weed Killer

The European Union was slated this week to consider whether to extend approval for glyphosate, a key ingredient for herbicides such as Roundup.

But Reuters, citing anonymous EU sources, reports that the decision will be tabled due to a simmering feud over whether the chemical should be considered safe.

The EU's food safety board has stated that glyphosate is unlikely to cause cancer, a conclusion that contradicts findings from the World Health Organization, which calls the chemical a likely human carcinogen.

France, the Netherlands and Sweden oppose the European Food Safety Authority report that says the chemical is safe.

Glyphosate is banned in many parts of Europe because of its alleged links to health problems.

France said last week it would not support renewal for the glyphosate license, which expires in June.
