Campbell’s Announces Support For Mandatory GMO Labeling

In a victory for pro-labeling supporters, Campbell Soup Company announced it supports mandatory labeling of GMOs.

"Our Purpose calls for us to acknowledge that consumers appreciate what goes into our food, and why—so they can feel good about the choices they make, for themselves and their loved ones," Campbell’s President and CEO Denise Morrison said.

Proponents for mandatory labeling of genetically modified ingredients just gained a major ally.

Campbell Soup Company announced January 7 that it supported mandatory GMO labeling on food.

The company said it believes it’s “necessary” for the government to provide a national standard for consumers, and it would support federal legislation.

Campbell announced it would no longer take part in any group that opposes mandatory GMO labeling, but it would continue to oppose state-based measures, arguing it creates “unnecessary confusion” for customers.

Groups such as the Environmental Working Group and US Right to Know have cheered Campbell’s decision.
