July is just about over, and with that, summer concert series Jazz in July goes dormant for another year. But before the lawn chairs and picnic blankets go back in the closet, each performance from Jazz in July's 2018 season is online and ready to be revisited, or even heard for the first time.

July 6: The Al Cobine Big Band

The late, eponymous band leader helped elevate Bloomington's music scene to the national spotlight, so it's only fitting that Jazz in July come back with the group carrying his legacy.

The performance is loaded with Cobine's arrangements of jazz mainstays, brought out with a booming sound from the 15-person-plus outfit.

July 13: Soneros de la Caliza

The Bloomington-based Latin jazz group brought a fusion of classic and modern Cuban Son-style music to the second week of Jazz in July. Plus, the audience got an impromptu preview performance from Ritmos Latinos Indiana, a local salsa group.

July 20: Charlie Ballantine Quartet

After a threat of thunderstorms, Jazz in July moved its third show of the month indoors to IU's Musical Arts Center, where the Charlie Ballantine Quartet's smooth sounds helped mellow out a packed-in crowd. Even if the storms never materialized, the group's rainy day feel kept up the relaxed mood.

July 27: Heartland Trio with Kathryn Sherman

The Heartland Trio capped off the series back out at the amphitheater. The band even gained a new member for the second half of the show in vocalist Kathryn Sherman. The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music students showcased a few jazz classics with a peppy, upbeat style.

It's still unknown as to what's in store for another round of Jazz in July shows next year. But if the crowds at all four concerts are any indication, Bloomington is glad to see it back.

Jazz in July 2018 is hosted by WFIU Public Radio and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. It's supported by presenting sponsor FARMbloomington Restaurant and supporting sponsor IU Credit Union Investment Services.
