The mission of Martha’s House is to provide safe shelter while working with the community to end homelessness. Martha’s House operates a 28-bed emergency shelter as well as permanent supportive housing for people with disabilities and people who are chronically homeless.
The shelter houses both men and women, and prioritizes residents from Monroe, Lawrence, and Owen counties. Guests can stay up to 120 days.
Case managers are on staff to address residents’ needs, and Martha’s House also provides bus tickets, lends out bicycles, and during the winter months hosts cooking classes to address some of the health problems that are often a root cause of homelessness.
Martha’s House is considered a “high barrier” shelter because guests are breathalyzed and will not be allowed to stay if they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Martha’s House Executive Director Bobbie Summers says this policy provides an environment conducive to addiction recovery.
