Stephen Sondheim's 'A Little Night Music'

The Indiana University Department of Theatre and Drama presents Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, a musical inspired by a book of the same name by Hugh Wheeler, which in turn was inspired by Ingmar Bergman's film Smiles of a Summer Night.

Julia Mosby is a junior B.F.A. student in musical theater at IU. She was recently seen as Mrs. Lyons in Blood Brothers and as Kate in Oklahoma!

Highlights From The Interview

"Desiree is first and last an actress," Julia says of the part she plays. "She was raised by a magnificent mother, a woman who had many affairs and she has followed in her footsteps. In A Little Night Music, Desiree has come to a weekend house party. There she meets an old love who has recently married a much younger woman. The younger woman is just seventeen. She's a bit of a trophy wife. Desiree gets to twit her old love a bit about this."

On the work of costume designer Erica Griese, Mosby says, "Erica is a third-year M.F.A. student and she's really good. IU audiences have seen her work in shows as varied as The Clean House, An Ideal Husband, The Wild Party and Metamorphoses. For A Little Night Music the costumes are period, much layered, and very elaborate. I have seen the drawings and the fabrics, but we're still in process. What I can say is that we've been practicing in the corsets. Audiences are going to see some pretty upright postures in this show."
