Electric Eel Powers Christmas Tree

Christmas time means chestnuts roasting on an open fire and a gorgeously lit up Christmas tree, right? Well, at a marine aquarium south of Tokyo, decorations are also going up, but not how you might think!

One decoration, the Christmas tree, is getting a lot of attention. The reason? The electricity that powers the lights is coming from an electric eel.

With each movement, the eel generates 800 watts of electricity. The aquarium has set up two aluminum electrodes inside the eel's tank. The electrodes capture energy and convert it to power the Christmas tree.

Now, that's what you call energy star!
