Ethnomusicologist Portia Maultsby

Portia K. Maultsby is a professor of ethnomusicology in the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology and directs the Archives of African American Music and Culture at IU Bloomington. Her specialties are African-American music and black American music, with a focus on popular tradition, transnationalism, and the music industry.

A composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist, she has served as a researcher and advisor for radio and television documentaries on the history of black radio and black religious music. She teaches classes on the popular music of black America and the music industry, and is the co-editor of "African American Music: An Introduction."
