Alexander McCall Smith has written more than sixty books, including specialist academic titles, short story collections, and a number of popular children’s books. He is best known for his No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, which has been on bestseller lists throughout the world and was recently adapted into an HBO series. He was born in what is now Zimbabwe and was educated there and in Scotland. For many years he was professor of medical law at the University of Edinburgh, and is now a Professor Emeritus at the University of Edinburgh. Indiana University Provost Karen Hanson conducted the interview.
