Pilot Program Tackles Aggressive Panhandling In Bloomington

Homeless man sleeps on a bench.

Panhandling is legal in many areas of Bloomington between sunrise and sunset, but Mayor John Hamilton says some of the people asking for help are becoming increasingly aggressive. To address the issue, the police department will install six cameras - some along the B-Line Trail and some near downtown - as part of a pilot program.

Bloomington is also launching a public awareness campaign to encourage residents to donate money to social services agencies rather than giving panhandlers money.

This week on Noon Edition we'll speak to local experts about homelessness and panhandling in Bloomington.

Noon Edition airs every Friday at 12 p.m.

Guests:

Mary Catherine Carmichael, Communications Director for the Bloomington Mayor's Office

Mike Diekhoff, Bloomington Police Chief

Lisa Amsler, Professor of Public Service at Indiana University, Founding Board Member of the Community Justice and Mediation Center of Bloomington and Monroe County
