Could Indiana Legalize Assisted Suicide?

doctor

The national conversation over assisted suicide picked up this month after California Gov. Jerry Brown legalized the practice, making it the 4th state to do so.

The new law, modeled after Oregon's Death With Dignity Act passed in 1997, means physicians can prescribe pills to terminally ill patients to end their life early.

While Indiana does allow for advance directives – paperwork that details spoken and written instructions about future medical care – it does not allow for assisted suicide.

This week on Noon Edition we spoke with three experts about the controversial issue.

Our guests:

  • David Orentlicher, Professor at Indiana University McKinney School of Law
  • Dr. Robert Stone, IU Health Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine
  • George Eighmey, Vice President of the Death with Dignity National Center in Portland, OR
