Indiana Challenges New EPA Carbon Emission Rules

More than 80 percent of Indiana’s electric power comes from coal, so the EPA regulation could have harmful effects on the state's economy.

New EPA rules require Indiana reduce its carbon emissions at least 28 percent by 2030. How that's done is left largely up to the state.

Under the new rules, states are allowed to decide how they cut carbon emissions as long as they meet one of two federally-established goals-either a reduction in total carbon emissions or the amount of carbon emissions producer per megawatt hour of electricity.

This week on Noon Edition, we spoke with experts about how Indiana might meet the new regulations, and the state's decision to join a lawsuit against the EPA.

Our guests:

  • Mark Maassel, President of the Indiana Energy Association

  • Jodi Perras, Indiana Representative for the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal campaign

  • Kenneth Richards, Professor of Environmental and Energy Policy, Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs

Noon Edition airs every Friday at 12 p.m.
