Later Ellis: Don Ellis’ Score for “The French Connection”

The French Connection scorePreviously on Night Lights: Don Ellis and The French Connection. It offers more than a taste of later, larger-ensemble Ellis, heard at the dawn of the 1970s, and makes (I hope) for a nice listening companion-program to this weekend’s show, Early Ellis: Don Ellis at the Dawn of the 1960s. If you ever come across a decently-priced copy of the FilmScoreMonthly CD, run, do not walk, to the cash register or the online checkout box. (It also includes Ellis’ score for the 1975 sequel.) We’ll be revisiting Mr. Ellis farther down the Night Lights road; in the meantime, I’m looking forward to the forthcoming documentary.
