Cold War BerlinIf you like or are interested in this week’s Night Lights program, Jazz Impressions of Brubeck, you might want to check out these shows from the Night Lights archives: Conover’s Coming Over: Willis Conover and Jazz at the Voice of America, which tells the story of how a jazz DJ helped win the Cold War, and Jazz Goes to the Cold War, an in-depth look at the international jazz tours that the U.S. State Department sponsored in the late 1950s and the 1960s by artists such as Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington, and some of the tensions that resulted from the ongoing civil-rights movement back in America.
