Former Indiana University employee Mark Zacharias appeared in court Monday for his first pre-trial conference. Zacharias has been charged with Institutional Criminal Mischief after allegedly using a rock to break the glass of an information board inside Goodbody Hall, which houses IU’s Jewish Studies Program. The incident occurred on November 30 and was one of several acts of anti-Semitic vandalism around Bloomington.
Along with the damage done to Goodbody Hall, police received reports of several other buildings with Jewish affiliations being vandalized. The Chabad House, a Jewish student center, and Hillel House both had rocks thrown through windows around the same time as the Goodbody Hall incident. Staff members at the Herman B Wells Library also reported that a number of Hebrew-related books had been taken off the shelves and flushed in toilets in the restrooms. A number of books were also damaged at the Monroe County Public Library.
Zacharias has only been charged in connection with the Goodbody Hall case. His pre-trial conference has been rescheduled to April 28.
