A student who was shot at a Martinsville school is improving.

Officials at Methodist Hospital confirm the victim in last Friday’s shooting at Martinsville West Middle School is now in fair condition. 15-year-old Chance Jackson has undergone two surgeries and is recovering from his injuries.

The 15-year-old shooting suspect appeared in court this morning at the Morgan County Courthouse for an initial hearing. The teen, whose name has yet to be released, faces five juvenile charges including attempted murder, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm without a permit on school property.

Morgan County prosecutor Bob Cline says the teen could still be tried as an adult. A hearing scheduled for April 18th will determine whether the suspect will be moved to adult court.
