Onions and radishes are a few of the many fresh food offerings at the Kokomo Farmers' Market.

Kokomo’s original market, held on Saturdays in the downtown area, will expand to another location on the West Side. The market will be open on both Saturdays and Wednesdays.

A returning vendor, Andrea Gerig, looks forward to the expanded dates and locations of the market.

“It brings our family a little bit of income. Through doing the Farmers Market we have learned how to get into small business.”

Despite the struggling economy, Market Director Amanda Wright-Jarrett says that residents and visitors of Kokomo have enough interest in the Farmers Market for it to succeed.

“It’s interesting because last year I attended their Fall Festival and there were a lot of folks that I have never seen Downtown, so I am hoping by starting a market on that side of town would be great way for people to learn about farmers markets, get hooked, and love it.”

Wright-Jarrett says that the ultimate goal of expanding is to create new jobs.

“We’re hoping by increasing foot traffic in that area of town it will help increase folks wanting to open new shops or increasing businesses.”

Official dates have not been decided, but the expected time of the new Wednesday market will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., from June to late August.

Farmers markets are great because it’s local fresh food at competitive prices, and it’s a great
thing to be able to meet the person who’s making/growing the food
you’re putting into your body. I’m glad to see them growing in popularity across the state!
