Trio Of Hoosiers Still Vying For National Spelling Bee Crown

The three students will begin their semifinal round on national television Thursday afternoon.

The Indiana students will step to the microphone with 39 of their peers in the semifinals.

Three students from Indiana have advanced to the semifinals of the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Thirteen Indiana students attempted to make the semifinals this year.

They are:

  • Joseph Kirkpatrick, 14, from Highland Middle School in Anderson
  • Mary Skirvin, 13, from Brown County Junior High School in Nashville
  • Margaret Peterson, 13, a home-school student from Granger

Kirkpatrick and Peterson are both competing in their third spelling bees while Skirvin is in her first.

They will join 39 others in the semifinals this afternoon. Those that advance will compete in the finals held tonight.

The semifinals will be broadcast live at 2 p.m. on ESPN 2. The finals will be shown at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
