Crews are hoping to finish the sections of I-69 that run from Evansville to Crane.

With the Indiana Department of Transportation set to open sections one, two, and three of I-69 by the end of the year, Spokesperson Cher Elliot says her department is looking at ways for communities along the route to enjoy the interstate before it is opened to traffic.

Elliot says INDOT reached out to local leaders, and some of the ideas for events include holding an antique car or tractor show, a 65 mile bike ride along the route, or even having a race where adults face off against each other on child-sized tricycles.

INDOT has asked the local groups to prepare a detailed description of each event requested, and INDOT will look into how feasible the plans are.

The target date for the grand opening events is late October, Elliot says.
