Henryville residents scavenge through the ruins of a house in Henryville, Ind., the day after the storms.
The tornado recovery efforts in Southern Indiana are shifting from cleanup to rebuilding. Steve Cain, a Disaster Specialist with Purdue University and President of Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, says most of the debris has been picked up and now they are looking for volunteers to help rebuild the communities devastated by the early-March tornadoes.
“We are training some of the local people to be able to do case management because they‘re going to have to work with some of the people affected by the tornado and also getting up to speed on construction management as we get into rebuilding and that kind of thing,” Cain says.
He says most of the people helping in southern Indiana have done a good job of overcoming the disaster to help their communities. He says there are those that have a tough time switching to recovery mode, but they have plenty of others to help those people through. Cain says a committee called March2Recovery has been set up to help gather volunteers and financial donations.
