Those who want a shotgun must submit to a background check and must go through training on how to properly operate the shotgun.

A group in Texas is giving away free shotguns to residents and they will soon be coming to Indianapolis to do the same. Justin Dupuy with the Armed Citizen Project says they are offering free shotguns to residents in high-crime areas.

“There‘s people in their homes that are scared to walk from their car to their house for fear someone‘s going to stick ‘em up and we‘d like that to change,” Dupuy says. “We‘d like someone to be there and empower them with a weapon.

Those who want a shotgun must submit to a background check and must go through training on how to properly operate the shotgun.

The group was founded by a college student named Kyle Copeland, who once lived in Indianapolis.

Dupuy says they plan on bringing the project to Indianapolis and many other cities across the country. He says the group sees this as a humanitarian mission.

Dupuy adds there is no timetable on when the group will come to Indy but it will be sometime in 2013.

Oh my! Can the poor children in Indy get free school lunches instead of this.

  • S. Clemens

How about free claymore mines? People could stick them on the sides of their cars and fire ‘em off when they park to clear a path to the door.

Excellent idea it’s your right to protect yourself and family

    Run-on sentence.

It’s privately funded. Their money, their choice what to do with it. Since it’s being done anyway, why don’t we take this as an opportunity to see how it affects local area crime rates? I would wager a pretty penny they go down.

Yes, because those are the same thing entirely. What you are doing is the equivalent of me saying “Why don’t we ban swimming pools because they kill more kids than guns.” Extremes, while fun, have no place in a serious debate of an issue.

  • S. Clemens

Nobody is passing out free pools, and people can’t carry pools into schools. What is extreme is that in a society too often prone to violence people would choose to hand out – for free and presumably without background checks – more instruments of violence. Guns are unique in that they require so little effort to cause so much destruction, and those “empowered with weapons” are less likely to back away from a fight they could otherwise avoid. When the “Armed Citizens Project” is done giving out the guns, they can return to Texas and wash their hands of any death or serious bodily injury they facilitated by their acts. It may be “their money” (your comment below), but the increased danger is ours to bear. Finally, passing out a few shotguns will have no effect at all on crime rates. Passing out many shotguns will have no effect. People who commit crimes are not noted for thinking about the consequences of their actions. If they were, the death penalty would have stopped murder centuries ago.

Without background checks? You do realize that’s not how it works for responsible gun owners right, the majority of what gun owners are? These people are not only background checked but forced to take a gun knowledge and safety course. Everyone who volunteers takes it together. Go ahead and look at the pictures of the people in the first course in Texas where they did this. Many are women, all different colors and creeds.

You are so completely devoid of any real world experience in this matter it’s insane. Do you think yourself so much smarter than the criminals? You think they don’t take into account the ability of their potential victims to defend themselves, alarms, size of their victim, potential police presence in the area…etc? Of course they are going to try to target an area where they can have high confidence their victims are defenseless. Again though, we can just wait ti see who’s right.

  • S. Clemens

You don’t have any idea what my real world experience is. Such a statement has no place in a serious debate of the issue. One real world experience I will share with you is that I have a job. Because it is pretty clear that you are unlikely to change your position, further debate would be a waste of my time. As a result, I decline to continue this discussion.
