The Terre Haute Fire Department responded to three structure fires in a 14-hour period Wednesday. Investigators say they’re all the result of arson.
The first fire happened at 9:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of North 16th Street, near Plum Street. Someone set items on the front porch of a vacant house on fire, and the fire then spread to the attic.
Another fire occurred at 828 South 7th street at 9:15 p.m. The fire started in the back apartment of a multiple-occupancy apartment building. Residents were in the building at the time, but escaped uninjured.
At around 11:30 p.m., the fire department responded to a third fire at 1518 2nd Ave at another vacant house. The home had been vacant and abandoned for about eight years, according to Fire Prevention Bureau Assistant Chief Norm Loudermilk.
Loudermilk says while investigators determined all three incidents are arson, he thinks it’s a coincidence they happened on the same day.
“There’s no indication from these fires that there will be additional fires to come,” Loudermilk says. “I think these are isolated incidences of fires that occurred.”
Loudermilk says anyone with information about the fires should call the fire department at 812-234-8653 or Crime Stoppers at 812-234-STOP.
