The first half of a new bypass around the southwest side of Terre Haute has opened to traffic. After a number of difficulties, including environmental issues and construction problems, Mayor Duke Bennett says he’s proud of the progress made.
“After many years of planning and construction,” Bennett says, “it’s been basically under construction for about seven years, about half of it has been completed and open.”
Bennett also says the road may help to increase traffic at a nearby industrial park.
“Half of the city,” Bennett explains, “now can take 13th street and go all the way down to Canal road and McDaniel and get on 641 and go to the south part…by Ivy Tech and the Industrial park.”
The final half of the project is expected to be done by November of 2014. Bennett says even though the bypass will send traffic around the city, he doesn’t expect it to reduce the amount of money spent by travelers who otherwise might have stopped in Terre Haute.
