Officials at the Terre Haute International Airport will auction eight airplanes on eBay to raise revenue to offset declining enrollment in their flight school.
The airport authority owns and operates the flight school used primarily by the Indiana State University flight program. A month ago, the Airport’s board started discussing plans to sell nine out their 17 planes, eight on E-Bay. The flight school will continue with the smaller fleet. Airport Director Dennis Wiss listed the planes for auction.
“There are 5 Cesna 152s, which is a single engine, 2-seat aircraft. There are 2 Piper Arrows, which are four-seat, single engine, retractable gear aircraft. There is one Decathlon which is a 2-seat, aerobatic aircraft.”
Of the planes for auction, only five are paid off. Wiss said the airport authority will not generate enough money from the planes’ sales to pay off their remaining loans, however, he anticipated successfully eliminating two-thirds of their debt. Wiss said this is the first time the airport has tried listing aircraft on eBay and they are operating on a learning curve.
“The gentleman that’s doing it for us and myself, neither one of us have ever done this before- sold anything on eBay,” Wiss said. “So we’ll have to set up an account, do all that kind of good stuff, take the photos, etcetera.”
Wiss says they hope to have the ad up by Friday.
