Protestors gathered to "send a message" to John Kerry and those who gathered to hear him speak.
Kerry's talk was part of the dedication of the university’s new Global and International Studies Building.
Kerry was sworn in as the 68th U.S. secretary of state in February 2013. He joined the State Department after 28 years in the U.S. Senate.
The state department says it will view all marriage licenses as equal when considering spousal-based visas.
