Indiana has seen 132 mumps cases so far this year, compared to 39 during the five year period between 2010 and 2014.
The study looked at crime rates in the three years after California passed criminal code reforms similar to those in Indiana.
There are 45 confirmed cases of mumps on college campuses and five probable cases.
Results for IU’s continuing assessment of diversity covers the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis.
Cases have been confirmed at Indiana University, IUPUI and Butler University.
University officials say they sent the students home and are encouraging anyone else with symptoms to visit the campus Health Services center.
The health department could conduct additional testing once it completes contact tracing.
