Indiana health officials say half the state is too far from a trauma center, and Indiana is one of three states that does not have a formal state trauma system.
The virus, which is transmitted through mosquito bites, can cause fever, headache, body aches, swollen lymph glands or rash.
Health officials are reporting the first influenza death in Indiana this flu season.
