Cummins enjoyed its largest fourth-quarter profit in company history last year. This, at least in part, can be attributed to reduced overhead costs generated by shedding thousands of employees. A high unemployment rate – close to nine percent now – could attract businesses to Columbus. That’s according to Mayor Fred Armstrong. He recently returned from a trip overseas courting companies to his southern Indiana city, some of which said Columbus used to have too small of a unemployment pool for them to invest in.

Diesel-engine manufacturer Cummins debuted its new office building in downtown Columbus last weekend. Hundreds came out to tour the structure, which was originally slated to house 500 of the company's employees. But as WFIU's Daniel Robison reports, since the Fortune 200 company has laid off thousands since the building started going up, there will be more open room on the facility's four floors than originally planned.
