Property Tax Challenges

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Comments

In a year in which record flooding also strapped the finances of local governments, a change to statewide property tax caps had an unintended consequence – less money to municipalities. As Hoosiers saw their sales taxes go up and their property taxes go down, cities and towns saw only the need for even more belt-tightening than a sagging economy already mandated.

Fallout From IU Men’s Basketball Sanctions

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Comments

Perhaps the story most closely watched by sports fans during the past year was the downfall of Indiana University men’s basketball, including a number of sanctions against the team, imposed both by the University itself and by the NCAA. The sanctions led to the firing of several coaches, the hiring of a new compliance [...]

Mark Kruzan, Poet Mayor

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Comments

Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan makes a point of answering all his own mail. So when a local poet sent in a few verses complaining about the upkeep of a city park, Kruzan couldn’t resist sending back rhyming couplets of his own…and WFIU’s Stan Jastrzebski could think of just a single way to do the story justice.

Denver Smith, 25 Years Later

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Comments

2008 marked a quarter century since a promising Indiana University football player was shot and killed by police, igniting outrage from the school’s African-American community. Daniel Robison’s story recounts the events of the night Smith died, through the eyes of the police officer who shot him, Smith’s wife and the newspaper sports editor who still feels guilt at the thought he might have been able to save Smith’s life, if only he’d known the athlete was in trouble.

Homeless GLBT Youth Face Additional Challenges

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Comments

Homelessness -- especially among children and young adults -- is a topic often forgotten in cosmopolitan Bloomington, but the problem is compounded by intolerance of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered youth, who are often shunned by their families and forced to fend for themselves. WFIU’s Cliff Gagliardo profiles one such person and talks to social services experts and lawmakers about what can be done.

Home Buyer Beware

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Comments

Bloomington officials have claimed for months the city was not hurt by the housing downturn and banks insisted they were not being more stringent in giving out loans. So why couldn’t a handyman with no student loan debt and enough money in the bank for a sizable down payment get cash from either a bank or the federal government to cover the remaining cost of a home?

Undercover Planned Parenthood Videos

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Comments

When a UCLA junior (and head of a pro-life organization) came to Indiana to film the conditions inside of Planned Parenthood clinics in the state, she chose to start in Bloomington and Indianapolis, releasing the films on the Internet less than two weeks apart. WFIU talked to Planned Parenthood officials to get a sense if the events seen on the tape were commonplace and talked to the student filmmaker to get her perspective on the undercover shoots. Then, when a state lawmaker asked for an investigation of Indiana Planned Parenthood, WFIU asked her why she thought the investigation was warranted; despite the fact no criminal charges had been filed.

Election Night 2008

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Comments

WFIU’s news department has a full-time staff of just two people and a part-time staff of just four more. But on election night, the station managed not only to anchor more than four hours of coverage, but sent three reporters into the field to do live shots from the county courthouse and the Democratic [...]

Remembering Evan Farrell

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Comments

One of the more gregarious and enigmatic figures on the rockabilly/bluegrass scene in the Midwest was bass player Evan Farrell – who at least once joined a band just by attending concerts and being vocal in his support of the musicians. So when Farrell died during a reunion taping session, it left a vacancy not just in a couple popular bands, but also in the hearts of all Farrell’s band mates.
