Some parents, students and clergy in Sullivan County want a separate high school prom banning gay and lesbian students.
A group of supporters met over the weekend to plan a separate “traditional prom” for Sullivan High School students that would prohibit gays from attending.
Southwest School Corporation Superintendent Chris Stitzle says the school plans to go on with its April 27 prom as planned.
“We always let all of our kids to attend,” Stitzle says. “We encourage them to attend. We want them to attend. We‘ve always prided ourselves on treating everyone with pride and dignity and that‘s what we plan to do.”
Stitzle said the school district does not support the group pushing for a separate prom.
