Crews work to remove tree limbs and downed power lines from the Siam House.
According to the National Weather Service, last night’s storms produced winds in excess of near 80 MPH; smashing through trees, tearing the roofs of buildings and damaging cars.
Severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings were in effect for much of the southern Indiana including Lawrence, Jackson, Decatur, and Monroe Counties.
Bloomington resident Akbar Anwarzai was outside of Kroger on 2nd Street and College Avenue when the roof of a nearby building was torn off and thrown across the parking lot.
“I literally watched the roof get pulled off this building like a band aid,” he said. “So it was pretty powerful winds. I did not hear a single siren go off.”
Damage also occurred at the Campus Walk Apartments, where a tree fell through the wall of a corner apartment. Several houses on Bloomington’s south west side also sustained severe damage.
One renter says several of his windows were damaged by the force of the wind.
Clean up crews spent much of the night clearing debris and repairing downed power lines. No serious injuries or deaths were reported.
