Democrat Mark Stoops will replace Senate Minority Leader Vi Simpson in the Indiana Senate, despite a redrawn district both he and Republican challenger Reid Dallas say tilts Republican.
During his campaign, Stoops regularly mentioned his opposition to building Interstate 69 and advocated additional funding for public education and ending the state’s voucher program.
“I think as a state senator, what I’d really like to do is focus on how they are judging the priorities of road maintenance and construction as opposed to new road building,” Stoops says. “Because much of that money that was spent on I-69 could have gone to maintaining our very poor road system.”
Stoops, who is a Monroe County Commissioner, was nominated in a party caucus in June after Simpson decided to join Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Gregg’s campaign as his running mate.
Prior to his role as a county commissioner, he served on the Monroe County Council for eight years.
