Memorial Day is often considered the unofficial start of summer tourist season. Indiana State Police remind motorists to be wary today of increased traffic along highways. State police will be stepping up patrols during the holiday weekend.
Formerly known as Decoration Day, because of the practice of decorating soldiers’ graves in the aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day became a Federal holiday in 1967 after the Vietnam War. More than forty years later, many Hoosiers will spend the day remembering those who’ve given their lives to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan.
