Train and Maroon 5 take the stage tonight for what now is a benefit concert for the victims of Saturday‘s stage collapse at the state fair, but two other scheduled state fair concerts elected to cancel instead of relocating.
Janet Jackson issued a statement that fair officials had canceled all the concerts scheduled for the grandstand. Her publicist maintains it was the fair‘s decision.
Train and Maroon 5 are still performing at Conseco Fieldhouse. Fair Spokesman Andy Klotz said White River State Park and Verizon Wireless Music Center offered their facilities too.
“[We are] very fortunate and grateful to other venues around the town that have reached out to us and offered possible assistance,” Klotz said.
A spokeswoman for Lady Antebellum, which canceled Friday‘s scheduled show, said the country group felt it would be inappropriate to take the stage so soon after Saturday‘s tragedy.
Klotz said he does not know what factors prompted Jackson to cancel. Jackson is a Gary native and her concert would have been the first in her home state in 10 years.
