State DNR Buys More Than 150 Miles Of Railroad Corridors

The state DNR agreed to buy more than 150 miles of abandoned railroad corridors in hopes of having a trail within 15 minutes of every Hoosier within 10 years.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has reached an agreement to buy more than 150 miles of abandoned railroad corridors. These will nearly double the length of rails-to-trails corridors throughout the state. Governor Mitch Daniels says that eventually it will be possible to wander Indiana on a bicycle.

Daniels says the goal is to have a trail within 15 minutes of every Hoosier within ten years. In addition, the Governor says private and federal grants will allow the DNR to add a total of 20 miles to five existing trails in the state.
