King brings 27 years of higher education experience to her role as president of the college.

St. Mary of The Woods College has a new president. Professor Dottie King was inaugurated yesterday at a ceremony on the West Terre Haute college campus. King began her career with St. Mary’s in 2002 as an associate mathematics professor. Vice President for Academic Affairs Janet Clark says the fact that she has been with the college for almost 10 years, makes her a perfect fit.

“Because she was a faculty she knows what it means to be in higher-ed,” Clark says. “And she is from within us so she is familiar with the complexities of our college.”

Over 100 students, faculty and friends of Kings attended Friday’s ceremony, including Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett who spoke as a dignitary.

The theme of King’s speech focused on the college’s sense of purpose and even drew tears from audience members as she delivered a passionate message about the importance of women’s colleges.  King says she will continue her commitment to encouraging women in their studies.

She currently serves as a board member of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce and the United Way. She has been married to her husband Wayne for 32 years; they have six children and four grandchildren. King is the college’s 16th president.
