Motorists were stranded Wednesday on State Road 37 southbound at the Monroe-Morgan county line. State police say slick, snow-covered road conditions on an incline in the area stalled 40 to 50 cars.
An Indiana Department of Transportation truck tried to clear the area, but ended up in a ditch. State Police along with INDOT workers have since cleared the stand still of traffic. However, all roads, including SR37, SR46 and SR45 in the Bloomington District remain snow covered, slick and extremely hazardous.
“Your car in this type of weather if you do get stuck is your best defense system,” says Sgt. Curt Durnil, Indiana State Police’s Bloomington spokesman. “We just want to make sure you stay there. If you have your cell phone we want to make sure you know where you are so we can get to you.”
Some areas are down to one lane and some remain impassable. A snow emergency has been issued for Owen, Monroe, Brown and Morgan. No cars except for emergency vehicles are allowed in to drive on the roads. Violators are being ticketed.
