A 19-year-old soldier from Spencer was killed in Afghanistan on Friday. Private Brett Wood was on patrol in Afghanistan when he stepped on a bomb.
Wood’s grandfather Charles says his grandson had been injured in a previous explosion but went back for another tour of duty.
“One of the guys in his squad stepped on a bomb and it killed some of them and Brett got hurt. He took some shrapnel,” he said. “Then he came home on leave, and he went back.”
The first improvised explosive device left Private Wood with a concussion and hearing loss. His older brother escorted the body was escorted back to Dover, Delaware, for a memorial ceremony. The casket will not return to Spencer for another 7 to 10 days, giving the family time to plan memorial services in his hometown.
According to his grandfather, Private Wood joined the military because his brother and cousins all joined within a year of one another, and he wanted to fight for his country.
