Officials with Citizens Energy and Indianapolis Power and Light say scammers are telling customers that President Obama has authorized a federal program to pay for their utility bills.
The Better Business Bureau says customers have been contacted through fliers, social media and text messages saying they can have their bills paid if they provide social security and bank routing numbers. Customers, in return, are given false bank information that they are told will pay their utility bills.
Customers are being told to never give out their personal information to anyone contacting them by phone or at home unless the customers initiate the contact themselves.
The utility companies say if customers receive phone calls or personal visits by someone claiming to work for the companies, the customers should call the customer service numbers provided on their utility bills or request to see the representative‘s company-issued identification. All IPL and Citizen employees are required to carry identification badges.
Customers can report any suspicious activity to the Better Business Bureau.
