Indianapolis basketball player Ron Patterson will not play for Indiana University this coming season after he failed to meet academic standards, the university said Wednesday.
“We think very highly of Ron and will continue to work with him as allowed to help him reach his goals,” IU Basketball Coach Tom Crean said in a statement. “He has the chance to do some special things for himself and his family and we will be supportive of whatever he chooses to do.”
The transfer solves a scholarship problem for IU. The university gave out 14 scholarships this year, one more than is allowed under NCAA standards. IU had to reduce its number to 13 before the start of the academic year if it wanted to evade NCAA violations.
