Cause Of Riley Hospital Illnesses Still Unknown

Four people were hospitalized Thursday, but tests for several toxic chemicals that could have been the cause came back negative.

Health officials says the cause of the incident in the emergency room at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health that made seven people sick and hospitalized four remains a mystery.

“There‘s a good likelihood that we will never be able to identify this agent,” says Dr. Virginia Caine, Marion County Health Director. “Usually, when you get to this stage, it‘s very rare that you identify something later.”

The department tested for numerous chemicals that could have been used and found none of them on the samples collected from the hospital. Still to come are results of toxicology tests for the patient whose bag is believed to have been the source of the problem. But that information must remain confidential because of federal law.
