Kelly Mitchell is one of three Republicans vying for the nomination for State Treasurer.

Kelly Mitchell, one of three Republicans vying for their party’s nomination for State Treasurer at this summer’s nominating convention, officially filed her paperwork with the state party today.

Mitchell has spent the last six years working at the State Treasurer’s office.

The former Cass County Commissioner is the Director of TrustINdiana, the state’s local government investment pool. She says her background in the Treasurer’s Office combined with her local government experience position her as an ideal candidate.

Mitchell says she wants to expand the Treasurer’s role in a number of areas. Those include greater involvement in teaching financial literacy and more providing more training for local officials managing public funds.

“I’m also really excited about an internship program that I want to create, a competitive college internship program,” she says. “I think, honestly, we’ll be the winners of that – getting top college seniors in public finance and political science into the office and getting their views and perspective on things.”

Marion Mayor Wayne Seybold and financial advisor Don Bates are also seeking the Republican nomination for State Treasurer.

The party will choose its candidate for the General Election at its nominating convention in June.

GOP incumbent Richard Mourdock is barred from seeking a third term.
