The General Assembly will once again consider a measure that would strengthen the state's open records laws.

State Senator Beverly Gard is sponsoring a bill again in 2012 that aims to strengthen confidence and transparency in Hoosier public officials. Gard says this marks the third straight year she has worked with the Hoosier State Press Association to gain passage of the bill. Gard says she has introduced the bill twice before, but both attempts failed.

“We know that most local officials and their senior management, most of them do the right thing,” Gard says. “It‘s just that small group of people who don‘t, but those are the people we need to address in this legislation.”

The goal is to strengthen enforcement of Indiana‘s open door law and access to public records act. Gard says this time around, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller is backing the effort. Gard says both issues have been addressed and expects passage during the upcoming General Assembly. It is called Senate Bill 92 which Gard says is filed and awaiting consideration.
