This week, IU’s Center on Congress is commemorating its first 10 years. Former Congressman Lee Hamilton helped establish the educational cooperative shortly after leaving Capitol Hill after 34 years representing southern Indiana. In addition to the Center on Congress, Hamilton was also tapped by President Bush to co-chair the 9/11 Commission and the Iraq Study Group. WFIU’s Daniel Robison sat down with Hamilton recently, and in the final except from the interview, the conversation turned to health insurance reform. Hamilton worked on previous efforts to grant access to insurance to increasing numbers of Americans, from Medicare and Medicaid in the 1960s to President Clinton’s failed universal initiative in 1994.
