Otis Elevator Closing Bloomington Location

Otis' Bloomington factory is closing in 2012, leaving more than 200 employees out of work.

A business that has been in Bloomington for more than 40 years soon plans to shut its doors.

A Spokeswoman for the Otis Elevator Company says four of the company’s locations will be consolidated, including a factory in Bloomington.

Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan says it was a foregone conclusion. “We knew this was likely to happen, but it doesn’t make it any easier. First and foremost in our minds are the employees and their families,” he said.

“We’re working already with state government and United Way to see what we can do to assist families in terms of relocating, retiring, or retraining and looking for new employment in the area,” Kruzan said.

Otis Communications Director Michele Batty says some of the employees have been offered opportunities to relocate to a more automated facility. About 70 percent of the company’s customers are located east of the Mississippi River.

The department will consolidate the engineering, manufacturing and supply chain departments.
