James Lerg was found by fellow officers near his squad car after failing to respond to calls.

An Indiana University police officer found dead near his squad car apparently killed himself.

According to police, 30-year-old James Lerg likely died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Lerg was on duty Friday night and wasn’t responding to calls. When officers went to investigate, they found Lerg by his squad car in the Memorial Stadium parking lot.

In a written statement, Police Chief Keith Cash called it a sad day for the department. Lerg was a four-year veteran of the department. The chief has requested Bloomington Police Department investigate the shooting even though there is no indication it was a homicide.
